Poem #255

Distance is not what I believed it was.
The biggest distance was those few meters
of the hospital hallway
those few steps between the door and the waiting room.

Even if I ran, it wouldn’t get smaller.
It’s like with every step, you were further away.
The sky and the earth and what the human mind
cannot fathom stands between us.

I don’t know where you are.
I don’t know what’s beyond this,
but I know what’s inside of me.
Emptiness. Hollow.
“We are sorry but…” echoes across my gut.

When I fell on my knees, asking if there’s a God
I felt like I am going to burst in pieces.
I hope there’s light above the terrestrial,
if not light then at least peace,
silence and the absence of suffering.
