Secret Love

In the crowd my eyes always searched you.
I tried to be always around you,
But you had no clue.
You never knew how much I loved you.

I carefully hid my feelings for you.
Only afraid from the world and you.
Because, I always knew,
I would never even get a chance to speak to you.

We both are two different ends,
Of the same rope.
Which are always together,
But never meet.

Soap, Salt and Sugar

Give us soap, salt and sugar, and be our master.
Just a little soap, salt and sugar,
And let your learnt sons whore our ignorant daughters.
Give us another of your speeches,
In which you promise to build bridges
Where there are no rivers.

Feed us with all the lies our illiterate ears
Wish to hear,
And give us soap, salt and sugar
In exchange for our freedom for the next five years.
Throw us a beer party, pretend to be friendly.
Give our fathers meat to eat,
And they will give you the vote to enslave their sons
While you enrich yours.
They will vote you,
To kill their wives in hospitals without drugs
While your wives fly to Cuba for better medical care.

I say, give us soap salt and sugar,
And rule us until you get tired.
The big government jobs, we do not need.
We shall train our sons to be your son’s shoe shines.
And our daughters to be your baby seaters.

Just a little soap, salt and sugar,
And feel free to make the rules for our ingorant
Sons to obey.
Spare the fatty, juicey jobs for your in-laws,
Our sons and daughters will gaurd your gates,
Carry your briefcases and wash your limousines.
Our grand sons will clean your kennels,
Our mothers will make your delicious meals.
The good food, we do not need,
We are honoured to eat your leftovers.
Just give us soap, salt and sugar,
And we shall salute you while you wine and dine,
With other statesmen who also give their voters
A little soap, salt and sugar on their way to “power”

Poem by, Bernard Gabriel Okurut.

About the author.
Uganda’s fastest evolving poet, singer, songwriter and freelance journalist. Author of ” The Noisy Silence” and “The Curse Of A Poet” both poetry anthologies published by Kindle Direct Publishers on Amazon.com,He is a current student of English language and literature at kyambogo university Kampala ugh Uganda and the founder of Psychic Poetry, a young East African poets movement. More of his poetry is on spillwords.com, amazon.com and his website, psychicpoetrycom.wordpress.com.
Note;
The poem ” Soap salt and sugar” is a political satire that ridicules the rottenness of the African political system where leaders only attend their voters during election time and bribe them with petty gifts like soap, salt and sugar. After they are voted into power, the voters are forgotten and the leaders only think of feeding themselves and their families. As a poet, I call upon people all over the world to challenge this unjustifiable political system. We all deserve an equal share of the national cake!
Thanks,
Bernard Gabriel Okurut.

Lost Love

I nevver wanted to lose you.
I always wanted to hear you.
I don’t love you.
But I don’t want to lose you.

In the fear of losing you.
I never argued with you.
Though, I am a bad person.
But, I tried to be a good person.

I blushed when I saw you.
I was always happy when I heard you.
Now that you have left.
My smile has also left.

In the fear of losing you.
I lost you.
I know I am boring
But I am also very caring.

Before, at dawn I smiled.
At noon, I laughed.
At dusk, I blushed.

Now, I wake up missing.
Whole day I sit sobbing.
And I sleep crying.

Now there is no gain.
There is only pain.

The Poised Princess

Walking the tightrope,
A poised princess,
You filled my cracks,
With stained-glass insets,
I twist and I turn,
To impossible shapes,
You revel in my lustre,
They watch, mouth agape.

Knowing well if I fail,
I’d shatter to pieces,
I hate you for being,
My well-favored weakness.
Then one day I fell,
With no one to catch me,
The cruel trapeze broke,
And it set me free.

You tried to find another,
Put her name on the marquee,
But no one could capture,
The crowd’s eyes like me,
But she’ll keep on twirling,
At your every behest,
As you mourn at the casket
Of the poised princess.

To What End

neglected
by the protectors
in charge
i’ll struggle

surrounded
by the horrors
the world has to offer
i’ll fight

living
by the sword
most of my days
i’ll wither

broken
by this life
and dysfunction
i’ll breakthrough

I believe

I believe one day
Girls will be fearless and free.
No girl will sacrifice her dreams.
No girl will seek permissions
to live her life freely.

I believe one day
This world will be good
to girls too.
It will be a safer and
Better place for her too.

I believe one day
No girl will be judged
Based on her outfit.
No girl will be asked to
Change herself for the society.

I believe one day
Girls will be respected equally.
No girl will be told
To stay quiet against the wrong.
Instead taught to raise her voice.

Dragon of Hope

Hope is a fierce dragon
Gliding through our souls with its powerful wings
A creature so majestic no eyes could detach from a sighting
Or deny it’s sacred presence
The divineness of the Scaly beast everlasting
Intertwined in the roots of our being
Revealing its beauty when we need it most
Breathing crisp blue fires of aspiration
The Inferno shielding us from fear and doubt
Claws of love wielded towards the demons within
Flying us forward when all else is lost
Past the cruel darkness and
unforgiving weakness that is trying to possess our existence
A dragon that is boundless
So beautiful, so divine
Sparking our eternal fires
The beast of hope watching as the blue flames glimmer in our eyes
Though our journeys are bound to end
Our flames will slowly fade, and
Ashes will rise
Being carried by the dragon of hope to what was once feared
A timeless journey into the depths of the unknown

Beauty of Imperfections

Why do we wear the mask of perfection?
Is my only question.
Everyone is imperfect.
Then why hide those flaws and pretend being perfect

Why do we hate our flaws?
And feel cursed to have it.
We keep hiding these flaws
Only afraid because the world won’t accept it.

But why does anyone need others acceptance.
If they love their true essence.
Why not be true to yourself.
And love the true face of yourself.
