Midnight lanterns

There we walked, calmly in these
streets of ours, gracefully dancing
while the night watched us, softly
and steadily guiding us on our path
carefully pushing our hearts back
into those warm lantern lights
away from the cold and hard world
outside of what the light touched.
Safely we reached for our hands,
eyes looking for each other and always
trying to meet the middle of where
the light fell and the shadows cast.
But sometimes 
dark is where 
the right way is found, 
cold is what
makes us dress warmer
and hard is how a heart needs
to break so it can become
unbreakable.
