Tears over Poetry

I have been writing since I was a little girl and poetry was always a part of my creative endeavour, but in the past decade I have read very little poetry. I read poetry here on WP and I read everything you guys send for The Poetry Bar, but I cannot remember the last time I went to the library to get a poetry book and read it.

Today, I was in the library to return some books and get some new ones and I decided to get at least one poetry book. My process, if I don’t have a specific book I want to get out of the library, is to just scan the books and go with my gut and it usually turns out good and I get a good book but this is very hard to do with poetry because most books are prose and the poetry ones are scattered all over the library.

I decided to go back to familiar territory and re-read the poetry of the Croatian author Dobrisa Cesaric. I loved his poetry before, it had a great impact on me and I just decided to revisit it. When I tell you I cried reading some of his poems again, I am not joking.

Some of his work still hits the same, it just strikes a nerve, wakes up something I always try to keep down, it just opened some wounds but it healed them too. I felt like that same teenager again who wrote down all her favorite verses in a notebook and they were all grim but so painfully beautiful. I forgot just how deep some poems can cut, no matter how many times you re-read them.

I made it to the middle of the book today and I think that will be enough of a blast from the past for today but I would like to discover some new poetry so feel free to leave the names of your favorite poetry authors and poetry books down in the comments. Since I like reading poetry in its original language when I can, feel free to leave the names of Portuguese, Italian and Spanish books in those respective languages so it’s easier to find on kindle (besides English and Croatian, those are the only other languages I know).

I look forward to reading what you got for me

Love,
Luna
