Hello everyone!
Since I now there’s a lot of self-published artists here, I decided to come to you with my question before going down a google spiral.
I am preparing a new poetry book and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make the book free on Amazon. Is it even possible? I already submitted the book for review and the lowest price I was able to set was 0.99$.
I am also preparing my first novel, which is taking a bit more time than expected, and my primary goal was to make the novel free as well because it’s my first novel and I just wanted to get reviews from readers without making anyone pay for it.
So, if you have any advice for me, leave it down in the comments and thank you for your help!
Love,
Luna
My first book is available on Amazon: Rehab

Not sure it could be on Amazon for free, but have you ever looked into vocal media? People can read things for free and then you get paid for it. I write on Vocal it’s a great site.
It might only be free to people who subscribe to Amazon Unlimited. I just looked and downloaded it free.
You can make it free, but it hast to be free on another platform, which also means it can’t be in KU.
‘Easiest’ way (I say easy sarcastically) is to put it free on a platform like Kobo (Kobo makes it easy to list your book for free), then let Amazon know and they will usually price match.
As for review. the best bet is to offer review copies to your followers/subscribers. They already are familiar with you and your writing.
With Amazon, you can include the ebook on Kindle Unlimited. That way, KU subscribers can read it without paying extra. But you can also make the ebook free for everyone else for up to 5 days. Every 90 days, your choice to keep the ebook in KU is updated. So every 90 days, you can set the ebook for free for everyone. It can be confusing, so feel free to ask if that didn’t make sense.
I should’ve added that for every 90-day term, you can set your ebook for free up to 5 days.
Dear Luna,
My first search for you was for print on demand publishers. They need to make a profit so the lowest price they have will be above zero.
BUT
If I may believe Google…
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)
allows you to publish for free on Amazon
BUT
I’ve had some trouble finding a confirmation on their website. I did find that KDP offers books on Amazon for free for 5 days by means of promotion. Maybe the permanently free option is well hidden on their site…
Why don’t you publish online? You can then decide if access to your material is paying or not.
Hope this helps
I think Amazon requires token minimum amount from when I considered going this route — but that was several years ago that I last looked into the matter. You might have flexibility after you set the minimum amount to go lower or free. Again, it has been a very long time, so I may be wrong about that.
One option is to publish here on your site for free and redirect to Amazon for people who want to purchase it for the token amount in the Kindle format. Just an idea to consider… Also possibly consider Lulu, but I think they have a minimum price for ebooks as well unless you pay for your ISBN, in which case they will host an EPUB or PDF version. Again, it has been a few years since I last looked into it and my memory is a bit foggy about the matter.
Good luck, sorry I don’t have a more definitive response.
Hi! I don’t think Amazon can do free books, because of shipping and all that. However, you might be able to use Silkroad for a free e-book version! Good luck with publishing! ❤
Hi Luna,
Absolutely, you can definitely self-publish your work on Amazon through their Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) service. It’s a straightforward process where you can upload your manuscript, design your cover, set your pricing, and publish your book all on your own terms. Amazon KDP provides a platform for aspiring writers like you, (and me from time to time), to share your creativity with the world. If you have any questions along the way, feel free to ask or I’d suggest checking it out for yourself! Wishing you the best of luck with your writing journey.
Warm regards,
Luke 🙂
Hi, you need to publish it with the lowest possible price, and then you can set campaigns to give it for free. I also recommend you set up a Kindle giveaway campaign on Goodreads. You can give for free up to 100 ebooks, and you might attract readers and reviews. I also see that your new book is also free with Kindle Unlimited, which is the other option you can use. Personally, I don’t understand why you would want to give it for free, I want to pay for your work, it’s an effective way to show my appreciation as a reader. I already downloaded your book and can’t wait to read it. I saw that you changed your name. 🙂
You can make it free on Kindle Plus by enrolling it for 90 days in Kindle Unlimited, and you can make it renew every 90 days automatically. But that means only people with kindle plus subscription who pay 10$ a month can read it for free. You will still get paid by how many pages they read. But it’s a very low amount. Like in cents.
