I need to do better

Daily writing prompt
How do you plan your goals?

I plan my goals in as little detail as possible. Sometimes it’s just me deciding that I want something and then I just wing it. This approach has not had a high rate of success.

The way that I tried to change my approach is to try and put deadlines on things I want to accomplish, but I try to be realistic and not limit myself to an age when I have to accomplish something because I am going to turn 30 next year and I don’t need any additional stress on that day. Also, I don’t plan big goals, I plan small goals that combined will lead to something better.

For example, I am working on the second book of The Stanhill Series. After publishing the first one, I took a long time to get back to writing and once I did it went like this: 3 pages one weekend, nothing for a month, frantic writing when I get a hit of inspiration and then nothing for a long time. That writing rollercoaster left me exhausted and disappointed because I felt like a failure if I didn’t write every week and then I felt like a failure again when I tried to force myself to write and couldn’t do it. I decided to plan my goal more wisely by setting a number of pages that I will write per month so it didn’t matter if I didn’t write anything for a few days, as long as I reach my monthly goal. So far, so good. Month by month I will come to the end of the book which is the big goal.

For now, this approach has done wonders for me in several areas because I put some milestones for myself without causing too much stress and anxiety around everything.
