Tears over Poetry

I have been writing since I was a little girl and poetry was always a part of my creative endeavour, but in the past decade I have read very little poetry. I read poetry here on WP and I read everything you guys send for The Poetry Bar, but I cannot remember the last time I went to the library to get a poetry book and read it.

Today, I was in the library to return some books and get some new ones and I decided to get at least one poetry book. My process, if I don’t have a specific book I want to get out of the library, is to just scan the books and go with my gut and it usually turns out good and I get a good book but this is very hard to do with poetry because most books are prose and the poetry ones are scattered all over the library.

I decided to go back to familiar territory and re-read the poetry of the Croatian author Dobrisa Cesaric. I loved his poetry before, it had a great impact on me and I just decided to revisit it. When I tell you I cried reading some of his poems again, I am not joking.

Some of his work still hits the same, it just strikes a nerve, wakes up something I always try to keep down, it just opened some wounds but it healed them too. I felt like that same teenager again who wrote down all her favorite verses in a notebook and they were all grim but so painfully beautiful. I forgot just how deep some poems can cut, no matter how many times you re-read them.

I made it to the middle of the book today and I think that will be enough of a blast from the past for today but I would like to discover some new poetry so feel free to leave the names of your favorite poetry authors and poetry books down in the comments. Since I like reading poetry in its original language when I can, feel free to leave the names of Portuguese, Italian and Spanish books in those respective languages so it’s easier to find on kindle (besides English and Croatian, those are the only other languages I know).

I look forward to reading what you got for me

Love,
Luna

Don’t forget I have a book you can get on Amazon: Rehab

  1. Dear Luna, I have responded to your poetry bar email about a poetry book. Thanks. 😊

  2. The best poet in our writing group can say in a few words what the rest of us have put in a short story, or can’t put into words at all.

  3. Poems can express our feelings beautifully.

  4. Andrea Gibson will always be one of my favorites.

  5. I love this Author and his book – Abstract Heart (he has others). I think you will too. You can find it on Amazon or used on ebay. Let me know what you think of him???

Go to Google and type in “J. Iron Word” and you can read poems and quotes displayed. I think you will love him/her. He moved up on my favorite poets right up next to Robert Frost.

  6. Poets feel pretty much the same when they revisit some old time pieces and sometimes find it hard to pick new reading material. I guess the most important aspect of such reluctance is the familiar eagerness to consume some poetry and literature generally. Good one there ✌🏾

  7. because you liked one of my posts on my wordpress blog “eee”

googled the poet you mentioned and looked for poems by him .., I was totally moved by this poem ,,, with the translation and such..

I will put the poem here — called “Jedne noći”

    One Night
That night I wrote, sitting all calm,

So next door my mother’s dream

    Would suffer no alarm.

And if I had to get a book,

With every movement I would fear,

With every single step I took,

Not to wake my mother dear.

The peaceful night thus crept on.

And then I remembered she was gone.

    (Translated by Pavle Ninković)

this blew me away,.. OMG I so related and identifies with these words ,,, my mom passed when I was 11 but before I would sneak across the floor while she was down stairs and hope she would not hear me ,,, so yeah just like totally on with this poem.

    1. It is a sad poem but true. The things we go to do and then realize that they aren;t going to be there when you pick up the phone to call.

  8. Thanks for liking my blog metamoments on wordpress. Rumi is one of my favorite poets.

  9. A subscription to The Poetry Review would pay off. Happy New Year.
