It’s basic and it’s the best

Daily writing prompt
Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?

Pancakes. But not just any pancakes. Crepes with Kras Express which is basically an instant cocoa powder drink but I didn’t put milk in it, I just put the powder in the crepes.

When I was a little girl, before I started school, my mom would often send me to my grandmother because there was no one to take care of me when my dad would get into his drunk phases. Every single morning, without a doubt, my grandmother would make crepes and then I would eat them with Kras Express and it was the best damn thing ever. I could eat like a dozen of them without thinking about it twice. Every single time my grandmother would return me back to my mom, I would be a bit chubbier. I wonder why? I also wonder where I got this sweet tooth from?

I honestly don’t remember the last time I ate pancakes in this way, which is kind of sad because I loved it so much. Maybe I should buy some Kras when I get home from my vacation and make some pancakes?

You know what’s the problem with that idea? It never tastes the same. Whenever I tried to replicate foods that my mom or grandma made for me when I was little, it just never tastes the same even when I follow the recipe completely.

What is your childhood food?

  1. Grandmas are like that, aren’t they? (God bless them.)

  2. When I was very young Mum took me on a picnic to the park. On the way we stopped at the bakers and bought a couple of individual chocolate cakes with a sort of rice crispy topping. I have never encountered a cake that tasted quite as blissful as that one. You cannot recreate memories.

  3. Shrimp Cocktail

  4. Luna, your nostalgic reflection on crepes with Kras Express beautifully captures the sentiment of childhood comfort and joy associated with a particular food. The way you describe waking up to your grandmother’s crepes and enjoying them with Kras Express resonates with the warmth of those early memories. Food has a remarkable ability to connect us to our past, evoking feelings of security and happiness.

Your observation about trying to recreate childhood dishes highlights a common experience shared by many. There’s a unique magic in the way meals prepared by loved ones in our childhoods seem to carry an irreplicable essence. Perhaps it’s the care and love infused into each dish, or simply the nostalgia that colors our perception.

It’s understandable to long for those flavors that defined our earliest experiences of comfort and joy. While recreating them may not yield the exact taste or feeling, the act itself can be a comforting ritual, a way to honor and reconnect with cherished memories.

Thank you for sharing your heartfelt recollection of crepes with Kras Express. It’s a reminder of how food intertwines with our personal histories, enriching our lives with a taste of the past
