Listen up, or better yet read up, I want to rant!
I am currently taking a week long vacation right here in Croatia with my mom. I love The Adriatic, love our seaside, love summer and I am somehow managing the whole problem of me not being allowed to spend a lot of time in direct sun.
This is a very chill vacation, meaning that there is no cooking or any type of work involved. I only make my breakfast in the morning, I have lunch outside in a restaurant and for dinner I either grab something from the store or bakery or I go to a restaurant again.
Now, speaking of restaurants and tourists…..
Listen, Croatia is a tourist country, we get a lot of people here and we are used to it, especially in the summer but some of these damn tourists need a fucking reality check. If I am sitting down to enjoy a meal in a restaurant, why am I forced to look at someone who is almost naked sitting next to me?
I would like to understand the thought process that leads these people to think it is in any way acceptable to sit down in a restaurant in your bathing suit. I don’t mind seeing it in beach bars or other establishments were it is clearly okay, but a restaurant? And don’t even get me fucking started on tourists who in no way cover up when they walk through the city.
The beach is for bathing suits. I do not want to sit in a restaurant and have to look at someone’s ass hanging out of a thong or someone’s hairy back. And yes, it is partially the fault of people who own restaurants and allow this type of behavior but still…. Have some damn class.
I just had to get this off my chest. For those of you who might feel called out by this, I stand by what I said. Put some clothes on if you are going to a restaurant.
I am going to eat my dinner now in my rental so I don’t get annoyed by other people.
Love,
Luna

There’s an older guy nearby who works in his yard wearing only a thong. No one wants to see that either.
Sorry to read this, Luna, but I know what you mean. Too often when we’re on holiday overseas we see this kind of behaviour, mainly (I hate to say) from those of our own country, which is embarrassing to say the least. The truth is that who behave this way have no class, and aren’t intelligent enough to self-discipline. They care only about themselves. The only way to make them behave is for the restaurants, bars etc that are not on the beach instil a dress code and not let in people who aren’t correctly and decently dressed. I suspect they’re willing to let it slide, however, because they want the money from these people. It might be an idea to ask the management – by social media message afterwards, if necessary – why they allow this, and maybe make it clear that you won’t be attending their establishment again if they allow it to continue. I hope you won’t let it spoil your holiday and that you have a good time for what’s left of it – despite the lack of going out in the sun. 🙂
It is simple for any restaurant anywhere to put a notice of a dress code by the door. ‘Shirts must be worn’ or whatever instructions are needed to get the message across. Your experiences are enough to make anyone favour a Taliban dress code! Most people, of most ages have bodies that I do not want to see and it would put me off my dinner for sure!
Oh thats gross and understandable, who would want to see that when eating. Ignorant on the tourist and shameful and greedy on the restaurant
Hi Luna,
I totally get what you are saying. I live in a tourist area that is on the Atlantic coast. It is a beautiful old town with cobblestone and a tranquil water front. Alas it is summer and people walk around with their A$$ hanging out as they walk along on their way to the dock. Bathing suits are not appropriate along the dock because it is fronted by several very nice restaurants that have outdoor sitting. It is bewildering how some folks have absolutely no dignity for themselves or courtesy towards others. These folks will saunter into a restaurant patio, plop down in chairs. . .It’s gross, but it is the restaurants’ owners that are to blame. I guess money is more important to them.
Good on you for calling it out lol
Great rant
What a hilarious post! Yes, I’ve experienced this as well along the Dalmatian coast, where my Croatian husband was born and raised (we live in the USA). There is nothing more unappetizing than the sights (and smells!) of these poorly attired guests. Equally annoying in Croatia is all of the cigarette smoking in the cafes. In the USA, smoking is not allowed in most public places (including restaurants and cafes) so it’s really difficult to deal with all the cigarette smoke when we’re in Croatia.
