I have an apartment that I rent. My mom gave it to me, I do not live in it and it’s an expense for me if it’s empty so I rented it out. I did it for the first time about two years ago and I had three rules: no pets, no smoking and no renting to workers. There’s a very big industry with renting apartments for workers, basically the company is paying for it. I broke my third rule and now it’s breaking my damn nerves.
The company terminated the contract with me on time, they had to do it 30 days in advance, everything was done correctly and I contacted the guy who was actually living in the apartment to tell him that I need to come and see the apartment while he is in there to confirm if everything was okay for the deposit and the last rent to be taken care of. He was like “fine, I’ll contact you”. That was beginning of February.
Yesterday, I found out from the neighbours in the building that he was moving out that day. Not a peep to me. I contacted him again, asking him when will it be okay for him that I see the place and he told me that he is moving and that he will leave the key TO MY APARTMENT with a guy at the construction site he worked on. I was livid. I also knew that something was very wrong if he was doing his best to avoid me.
My family got the key and my sister and mom entered the apartment to see what is going on. To quote “it smells so bad that it burns your eyes a bit”. I AM LIVID. He couldn’t even take his own trash out, everything is just sitting there. The place has two bedrooms, one main and one that’s like a kids room. He left the sheets filthy in the kids room. There is something my sister described as sludge in the part of the washing machine where you need to put the detergent. That’s just scratching the surface of what he left behind.
I am going there on Friday to see it all and to start cleaning EVERYTHING. This weekend is not going to be pleasant. Luckily, I already have a couple who would like to rent it out and they sound like nice people so hopefully my renting karma will improve.
I can already smell the cleaning supplies and the mask I will be wearing over my face to survive there until the air becomes clean again.

So sorry this happened to you – rental can be a nightmare, and I fear it’s the luck of the draw. My sister-in-lw had dream tenants for many years, although she still had to spend a small fortune updating the house when they moved. I also saw a woman on Facebook who had the nightmare tenants from hell. Better luck with the next lot.
Know that feeling. They quoted almost $9000 to fix my rented apartment. The place was so trashed. Hope you sort it out ok 🙁
Oh man, that’s horrible.
