What’s your home decoration style?
I have spent the last 10 years living in rented apartments so my home decoration style has never been according to my taste. I had two places where I did like the style which were my previous apartment and the apartment where I lived when I was a student.
I always said that your 20is are for shitty apartments but I have entered my 30is and I am still living in a rented place. In Croatia, when you rent out a place it comes with all appliances and furnished. It’s very rare to find a place where the owner expects you to bring your own furniture. You can always change things up, but you need approval from the owner and it makes it a hassle to move out because if you are switching from one rented apartment to the next, it’s not very easy to move with furniture or appliances since all apartments already have them.
I personally dream of having my own place which I could decorate according to my taste. I do have an apartment to my name which I rent because it doesn’t fit my plans to live there, but I want to buy an apartment one day and not just have the one that my mom gave me. I don’t know why that would make me feel like I accomplished a milestone in life.
Let’s get back to interior design. I don’t like what I call “ikea design” when everything is white/grey/black and all the furniture looks the same. I don’t want to insult anyone who likes it, I think it actually looks very clean and polished, but I need some color. One day, when I get my own place, there will be color – starting with dark emerald green. I don’t know why I am obsessed with it when it comes to interior design. I would also like to have a bit of a dark academia vibe in my future apartment. Also – high quality wood furniture and marble (if I will be able to afford it).
After that I give a lot of importance to lights. I need to have settings for my lights because I don’t like big lights, especially in the evening. I need to have to option to dim the lights or have lamps to use as an alternative to “big lights”.
I could go on and on in my little fantasy but I will quit it here because I am starting to come to terms with the fact that I have no money.

When I left home at 19 – decorated to my parents’ taste – I started living in rented accommodation because I was moving around with my husband’s career. I was 48 when we finally settled and brought our own place, and we moved from that after just over 11 years into our current home – both of these done up the way we like it. So it’s never too late, and at least over time you get to see so many other styles of decor that it helps decide exactly what you like. 🙂
