Internal Instinct

in the shadowed recesses
of my mind

i’ll keep the secrets
not easily shared

the thoughts which wound
myself and others

hasty utterances withheld
avoid bruises of the heart

diplomacy, caring or tact
call it what you will

this maturity gleaned over years
demands it
