At the VA Garden

Bumpy, bald
knobbly branches
grow twisted from the ground.

They must have scoured
meadows, mountains and marshes
hunting the perfect plant
to mimic the scarred ends
of amputated limbs
for this graphic garden of memory.
Even safe, back on home soil,
the wounds of war
are imitated and displayed
beside the fishing spots
and prayer alcoves.

I guess Never Forget
is an order, not a suggestion.
