What Lurks Inside

Behind the interactions, smiles in a moment,
Like an instant picture, it’s quickly gone,
Insecurity lingers, protesting to my conscience,
“You’re not good enough for this kind of love”
I brush it off as the debris of trauma,
Old experiences trying to dip into my future
But they can stay in the glassy mud of old goodbyes
I know my worth, I know my mind,
I’ll never let him see the darkest side, the green bruises,
I’ve carried all my life, pushed away to survive,
Because he’s my soulmate, I want to protect him,
From the flames that touched me first,
I never want him to hurt, or feel so inadequate,
That he must hide the ugly parts in a suitcase,
Tucked away in the midnight of yesterday
