A Teaspoonful of Life

Each day I stand by you and admire your elegance,
Gaping at the creator’s work of art in all its abundance.
The cool breeze that blows rich in your fragrance,
Caressing my senses, with no fooling, no pretence.

You’ve been there before me for a very long time,
And many must have fallen for you in your prime.
I love you for the way you put yourself up with pride,
Just by seeing you, my heart swells with joy inside.

Oh, Rosa, our neighbour thinks of you fondly, dear,
For eighteen-odd years, she said, you’ve been there.
She remarks on how beautiful you are, inhaling your scent,
The joy of a community that’s what you represent.

I don’t know who planted you there, my dear Rose,
And I would be surprised if anyone even knows.
All I could do was thank the person in my heart,
Leaving you behind selflessly was the best part.

I promise to look after you as long as I am here,
Though none of us knows what the future holds dear.
But I am here for a reason, the same as you are,
So, let’s walk together, and not worry about how far.
