The Outside

Do you remember life before the internet?

There was this thing called ‘The Outside’ when I was very young. I think I am one of those generations that still got to experience life without the heavy use of internet. It was around, just not as much as it is today. I know I will sound like a grandma now, but I don’t care. Life before internet, specifically social media, was much better.

I grew up in a rural area and it was common for me and my friends to just get together and spend hours playing. We had rollerblades, bikes, we would go on long walks etc. I think we were definitely very creative because we often had to find a way to entertain ourselves. We didn’t have a playground near our home, but there was this little road where there were rarely any cars so that was kind of our playground. I learned to use the rollerblades there and I am so sorry I stopped doing that when I got older. I saw people rollerblading on Jarun recently and kind of got sad that I dropped it as a hobby.

One other thing that was a bit weird before the internet was that we used to use landlines. Back then people usually had phones in their houses so that was the main means of communication. I don’t know about you but, before kids had phones as soon as they got out of their mother’s womb, another form of communication was your mom yelling from the window that you need to get your ass home for dinner. Mine had a really good view of the road we used to play on so she was usually the partybreaker.

All in all, it was a different time!

  1. Completely agree 👍…; -)

  2. No kidding. 🙁

  3. The good old days.

  4. As much as I quibble with the Internet, the real emotional and intellectual effects began with smart phones and social media, because they are more addictive. “Social media” is isolating us in the real world, and college students are remarkably unprepared to handle academic work.

  5. True, childhoods without internet are better. But that’s still possible, I have a friend whose kids don’t have a phone. They play in nature and in the kindergarten.
