Ruby Crowns

Such a furtive, nervous creature, like me
So tiny, not an easy bird to see
It felt like such a happy coup
The day I could identify you

Now I know you easily
By glance and sound
I know I cause anxiety
When you flash your ruby crown.

If only humans communicated
So effectively
If only we could see and listen
Reflectively, with sympathy
Even when we don’t agree
If only we
Could always see
Each other’s ruby crowns.
